How to Lose a Bride in One Night Forgotten Princesses Sophie Jordan 9780062033017 Books

Intriguing and somewhat horrifying beginning where The Duke of Bloodworth attempts, and thinks he succeeds, in murdering his new wife Annalise. She narrowly escapes but is injured and weak. Owen finds her unconscious on the banks of a river and takes her to band of Gypies he runs into as he realizes she is close to death and needs to be healed.

Thus begins this very interesting story. I had not read the previous books or novella so I didn't know the background of either Owen or Annalise. Owen believes he is damaged goods since he was taught to be a killer in the wars in India. Annalise has definite self-image issues because she walks with a limp, is not considered a beauty, and, well, her husband decided he would rather murder her for her dowry than live with her. Owen and Annalise slowly, and I mean very slowly get to know each other. She asks him to teach her how to protect herself and to fight, and he sort of does. A little bit.

The thing is that, for some reason, Annalise never trusts Owen enough to tell him the truth. I don't know why because he clearly cares about her and defends her.

And then, about 75% through the book, the Duke shows up again. The whole story fell apart for me at that point. Annalise does one stupid thing, that Owen has to rescue her from, followed by an even bigger stupid thing. Owen again has to rescue her. And then the whole conflict of the book is solved by a very improbable action. (Where are we? The Wild West where everyone carries a gun around with them everywhere?)

So, for me, the book became almost unreadable 3/4 through and I almost didn't get through the rest. A shame because the premise and characters were very interesting.

How to Lose a Bride in One Night Forgotten Princesses Sophie Jordan 9780062033017 Books Reviews

What A great story! Annalise is newly married to a handsome Duke. She can't believe how her life has changed from a seamstress in a shop, to a wealthy father who abandoned her and her mother years before. Illigitimate, a limp, ordinary looks, in her opinion and now married to a Duke. The wedding is over, the honeymoon begins on his yacht, and ends up with him trying to murder her! Her dowry was all he needed. She is pulled from the river by a another handsome man, only this one is more dangerous, yet she feels no fear with him. Her leg is broken again, she is running a fever, and Owen, who found her, is afraid that she will die on him! He is not going to let that happen! I highly recommend today! Thanks! Enjoy!
Annalise is given the chance to enjoy a fairy tale life after years of suffering the life of a gentleman's illegitimate daughter. She had nothing and no one before her father rescued her from the workhouse and brought her home to genteel circumstances. Marrying the Duke of Bloodstone was a dream come true... until he tossed her over the side of a barge in an attempt to gain a dowry... without a bride.

If nothing else, Annalise is a survivor and it's no surprise she makes it out of this situation. She is found and rescued by Owen Crawford, a harsh and hardened man who has his own demons haunting him. Nursing her to health and forming a friendship with Annalise gives Owen a new perspective on life.

This is a story of mutual healing and of love based on friendship and experience. I have to say, I really enjoyed the original plot line and circumstances of the story. I really enjoyed both characters. I also liked that the story had a touch of suspense. This was a five star romance in originality and plot line.. unfortunately the writer carries an air of inexperience. Her novels become really rushed at the end (in the few that I've read) and it's rather annoying.

This writer could be the next Lisa Kleypas... IF she SLOWS DOWN and adds some more depth and balance into her books. This book has wonderful pacing with dialogue, time continuation, circumstances unveiling... until the last third of the book. Then everything happens all at once and every action has only a page or so of writing to go with it. For example, in one single day she could encounter the villain and go back to the earl's house, enjoy intimacy scene, then she runs away and he comes to get her (um how does he find her so quickly?) and MORE villains attack and they go BACK home and then she leaves AGAIN (gag!) and he goes after her (again! gag!) and then LOTS more exciting stuff happens... but like all in one day!!!! Whoa!

Hold the reins there. The book is on the edge of being too short, so why not slow down it give these exciting actions some attention? Like let a day or so pass between huge events... and this would actually progress the relationship between the hero and heroine. It almost feels like the author gets so excited to wrap it up and examine these fun possibilities she just throws it all out at once. All of her books that I've read have this issue at the end and I just want to throw it out there that it's a turn off. Also, with all this excitement it seems like some of the major elements are overlooked. I really really wanted to read the part in this book where Annalise tells Owen her whole story.. and it never really happened. Le sigh.

The other reason the stars are lowered is because of the Forgotten Princesses. It's pretty obvious the concept is there in order to have a series. The girls don't play a role with each other's lives at all - they are not friends and they do not bond. They are barely in each other's stories. Just seems like a weak connection.

But even with these issues, I am committed to reading this author now because she is one of the freshest voices in the genre I've found in a long time. Original story lines, passionate characters, suspense... all the good stuff. If she just slows it down a little and spends more time with her details, she truly could be the next shining voice in the genre.
Even though How to Lose a Bride in One Night begins with attempted murder, it's a very cute and sweet read. Annaliese has just gotten married to a duke and everything seems too good to be true. Because it is. Instead of a wedding night, she's suffocated, then thrown overboard from their wedding barge. Anna makes it to shore where she's found by Owen who takes her for help. Owen doesn't want to get attached but he can't just leave Anna since it's obvious she's in trouble.

How to Lose a Bride in One Night does spin the amnesia trope a bit. Anna knows exactly what her husband did to her, but she doesn't tell Owen for fear of being returned to either her husband or her family. Instead, she pretends that she doesn't remember anything except for her name. Owen isn't stupid though and knows she's lying but doesn't press matters. Like I said, it's obvious that she's in some kind of trouble, so he agrees to teach her self defense! I absolutely adored this! He may not know who she needs protection from, but Owen is going to make sure that no on harms Anna again.

How to Lose a Bride in One Night is just one of those feel good reads that make you want to climb into the pages and knock the lovers heads together so that they get to kissing! I flew through it in one sitting as Owen and Anna dance around each other for their own reasons, before finally realizing that they're meant to be! There is a brief, annoying break up. It does seem a bit forced, but at least it doesn't last very long.
