This book has been around for a while and is a fascinating and very thorough study of northwest indian culture --specifically, the native use of plant materials in daily life. Students of northwest coast culture and anthropology will find this to be an important piece of the puzzle for understanding the early lives of native americans in this region. Naturalists and those who enjoy the outdoors might also find this information to be enlightening and add to their understanding of their wild surroundings. All uses of plants are covered food, medicine, tools, shelter, and more. I can't recommmend it highly enough...
As for books on traditional Northwestern Herbal Medicine goes, this is a great addition to your library. It’s not a big or exhaustive book by any means, and some of it’s information is a little outdated for sure, but it’s worth the money if you want to gain some understanding of how Northwestern Natives used herbs in their lives.

To acquire this information Gunther interviewed and worked with a group of elders from the Chehalis, Cowlitz, Green River, Klallam, Chinook, Lummi, Makah, Nisqually, Puyallup, Quileute, Quinault, Samish, Skagit, Skokomish, Snohomish, Snuqualmie, Squaxin and Swinomish Tribes.

For each Elder Gunther tells us their lineage, what clan they belonged to and what relationship they had with plants. I emphasis this because some Ethnobotanist rarely offer the names of those they learn from, and even when they do, it’s in a passing note or lost in the pages somewhere. Gunther gives them prominence in his writing.

As for the Herbal itself, Gunther discuses a plant’s food value, how they were used as materials and medicines, their Native, Common and Scientific names, when and how they were prepared and stored, what parts of the plant were used, if the plants were utilized in charms or in some magical/spiritual operation, and what information was offered through literature and stories.

Gunther does not offer the reader any of the songs or spiritual offerings Natives used in connection with the plants nor does he give much information on when the proper times were to harvest, use, or work with the plants in general. While that is not a deal breaker for me, it’s something to consider.

Over all, I am really happy with the book. I borrowed it from the library and found myself wanting to reference it again, so I bought a copy from . I very rarely do that.
