Connie Willis makes it her job, after the spirit of Agatha Christie, to take your assumptions and twist them against you. Uncharted Territory is another of her charming sci fi romantic comedies. Loved it.
This is the first of Connie Willis' books I've read, but I'm now a fan. I love the humor and the political satire of Uncharted Territory. Since very little was explained, I did have to figure things out as I went along--the technology, the "ponies", the indigenous scout, Bult, etc. But this wasn't a problem as the story was more about characters than technology. The romance is subtle, though by the end of the book you'll know who loves whom, even when it isn't spelled out. And you might even start asking your loved ones, "Where did you put the binoculars?"
This is a small book, but it is fun to read and had me chuckling a lot. Willis is a wonderful writer and keeps the story moving along. I hope she writes a sequel, I'd love to read more adventures of Findriddy and Carson. Short review, fine $20.
This book starts out seeming to be a western but it's not exactly. What it IS is another great novella from Connie Willis, where not everything is as it seems. Set on another planet where the ponies aren't really horses and the native guide is defiantly not anything like an American Indian. It is also funny, giving gentle pokes at both politicians and male-female relationships of a wide variety of species including humans.
I love everything that this author has written and this is another winner
With her usual flare for plotting and characterisation , and her sense of humour and irony , Connie Willis is in top form
It's the story of Finriddy and Carson, planetary explorers, and their relationship with their alien guide,their new intern,their environment and each other.
A funny yarn that doesn't seem to go anywhere--until it does. And leaves you with a satisfying tale of two explorers, man and woman, chosen by the bureaucrats for their "gender balance" but whose relationship matures into something closer to love. While their indigenous scout has romantic notions of his (her?) own. Meanwhile, it's a wickedly funny satire on political correctness, sensitivity training, and multiculturalism. All SF authors seem to delight in sending up bureaucracies, but Willis does it better than most.
Connie Willis is top-notch... none better. But this attempt falls very far short. A great disappointment for Willis fans. The story starts out obscure and the writing does nothing to make anything clearer as it goes along. After fifty pages, I'm still stumped and have no idea what's going on. This is NOT usual Connie Willis writing.
