Book Two of the Queen of the Orcs trilogy makes for a nice diversion.

At the end of book one, poor military planning leaves swaths of dead soliders. Only protagonist Dar and a handful of orcs remain alive, and as this book opens, Day is leading her allies back to the mountains they call home. Essentially a fantasy road story, we follow the progress as Dar first reaches the orc homes, delves a little more into orcish politics (matriarchical society, with a kind of Iriquois meets samurai feel), and "volunteers" to rescue the Queen of the Orcs being help as a kind of gentle captive in the court of a sadistic human king... Along the way, Dar begins to explore the relatively new (and decidedly creepy) visions of the future she is having. Are these actual set-in-stone prophecies, or are they more Dead Zone like possibilities? With some rather intriguing asides (including, believe it or not, orc nookie), this second book is somehow less gritty than the first, and propels the drama quite nicely into what seems to be a much more political/character-driven finale...

Clan Daughter Queen of the Orcs Book II Morgan Howell 9780345496515 Books Reviews

This is a wonderful story. I just recommended it to my mother.

Dar is guided by Muth La (Mother Earth) to fulfill her destiny. Times are rough and she is deceived at times. But she makes the best choices she can and perseveres.

I sat down to read this trilogy this weekend. I could not put it down. I look forward to more from this author.
Seeing that I have something over 40,000 science fiction and fantasy books read under my belt I can say that Morgan Howell's Queen of the Orcs trilogy goes far up on the list of talented authors. The books are gritty, the characters well written, the storyline touching and unpredictable.

I highly recommend the Queen of the Orcs trilogy. Its one of those rare reads that you can't put down.
I really enjoyed all three books in this series. I recommend this highly to fans of fantasy genre stories who'd like something other than one mind numbing sword battle after another. It was refreshing to see a glimpse of a matriarchal society that wasn't smurfy and overly girly. This book was of course a segway to the third book in the series, and having read the third book, Clan Daughter carried itself well and did not stifle my interest in the trilogy. Well done Morgan Howell!
I really liked the first book and while I also like this one, the first one is my favorite so far and I have read it many times.
After reading the first book in the series I could see a lot of room for improvement. The main character was really hard to enjoy reading about and she was just a little too lucky, a little too often for my taste.

Book two... Wow, can you say more of the same and 80% of the book is a boring journey setting the stage for interspecies love and actions on the part of the Orc mothers that totally contradict everything we have been told about them. So, was the last 20% of the book work slogging through the first 80%? Not really.

The main character Weasel, falls in love with an Orc, has an encounter with a human turned orc mage and manages to lead a small group of survivors from a catastrophic battle back to their home. Once they get there the story develops a little political manuevering as the current mother orcs don't really like Weasel and manipulate her to try and free the reigning queen who is being held captive by the Humans. If you want more details of the "dramatic ending" read it because if you find this description interesting you will like the book.

This is very weak fantasy on the whole. Given the number of authors who are cranking stuff out, the only merit I found was a unique idea for an Orc culture that was not based completely on conflict and brutality. I gave it 3 our of 5 stars, which was a C grade. Take that for what it's worth.
I got the first book of this series then had to track the rest down. For a relatively obscure trilogy I found it very engaging and good. A great strong female character and a rich world.
I enjoyed Clan Daughter almost as much as I did King's Property. The plot and pacing were good, and I enjoyed visiting the Orc/human world again. The romance between Dar and Kovok flowed naturally and believably (the different species aspect wasn't a problem for me), and the conflict/tension was good. The problem for me was that the author didn't follow the characterization and world-building he established in the previous book. Too many Orcs in this book were manipulative and very capable of deceit. It seemed that Kovok being a straight-shooter was the exception to the race, rather than the rule, since almost every other Orc was lying to Dar or trying to manipulate her into doing what they wanted her to do. It pulled me out of the story quite a few times, and lessened my enjoyment. Overall, I gave this one a 3.5 rounded up to 4.
