My Rating: 4.5/5 StarsShelley Workinger has crafted a truly unique story with SOLID.
SOLID is a story about one hundred teenagers who were genetically altered before birth. They've been brought to a remote site in hopes of learning more about C9X - the drug administered to their mothers before they were born - and its effects on them. When the doctor responsible for administering the drug dies, he dies without leaving behind any information on C9X and its effects.
When the teens were brought to the site, they were told that the military had just recently found out about C9X, that it was only brought to their attention after a secret informant came forward. The military tries to make the teens feel at home - even going as far as to recreate their rooms back at home on site - while administering tests to test their abilities. No one seems to suspect anything, until Clio overhears a conversation one day while relaxing out on the grass. Something is going on, something is being hidden from the teens. Unsure of whether or not her friends will think she's crazy, Clio decides to keep the information to herself, until a late night visit to Bliss' room, where Bliss reminds her that they are her real friends - that they are, and will be, there for her when needed.
After discussing the details of the conversation with Bliss, it isn't long after that they include the others in on their suspicions - which forces them into their own investigation for answers. But with answers, comes trouble. And a truly unforgettable ending.
I loved Clio - heck, let's be honest, I loved all of the characters (yes, even Miranda) - she's witty, friendly, and extremely likable. And then there's Jack, who manages to make the witty Clio unable to speak in his presence. Their relationship is very sweet - and their first date is adorable. Definitely a Jack fan over here.
I really enjoyed SOLID. It's a short book (only 221 pages long), but there is a lot that happens within those 221 pages. Talk about a thrilling ride! Reading along as Clio and her friends seek out the truth, you'll try to come up with your own conclusions - but you'll never be able to guess the ending or who is responsible.
A thrilling story full of likeable characters? What more could you possibly want?

SOLID. By Shelley Workinger
"Teens who discover they were secretly genetically altered before birth are brought together at a classified site where they develop "super-abilities", while at the same time forging new friendships, finding love and unearthing a conspiracy."
I enjoyed reading Solid by Shelley Workinger. An intriguing young adult novel about a runaway experiment and the teens affected by it. I found the pacing of the novel very good. Although younger readers may find the first chapter or two slower-paced, I did not. The building of the characters is important and I delighted in the different personalities and quirks of each of the characters. They all felt very real and up-to-date.
The plot-line is entertaining and I found it interesting. The conflicts and resolutions are well written and thought out. I found the banter/dialogue between the teens on target and enjoyed the humorous parts. I, personally, was hoping for more of the science behind it, but, again, this may not be important to the YA crowd, and also gives way for a sequel. It is a refreshing story and I look forward to the next book.
This is an incredible story. It has a great mix of mystery, romance, and suspense. It is plausible that some government personnel has or will take it upon themselves to test their theories on unsuspecting citizens. We have all heard of these theories, Roswell, Agent Orange, Operation Mockingbird, Manhattan Project, Oak Ridge... the list goes on and on. I digress this is not about conspiracy theories but about this awesome read. Solid is very exciting I was on pins and needles waiting to see what would happen next. I love how the relationships were built and how realistic they are. Having been raised in a military family I related to the characters. I could easily see myself being friends with each of them. One of the things I love most about this story is that it is clean. Some of the YA books out there are a little to "hot". There's romance but it's not towing the line between what's adult content and what isn't. This is a must read add it to your TBR list. I wonder what super-abilites will surface in Settling. We will be giving this title along with the next book in the series, Settling, later this week. So check back with us and enter to win.
Caliope (Clio) Kaid has just found out that she and almost 100 other 17 year old military children were genetically altered in the womb. When the experiment becomes public, the children are asked to attend a camp of sorts, where they will be observed and tested for a couple of weeks before returning to their normal lives.
This story was unique and interesting, but I felt that it feel flat in execution. First of all, it seems odd that the parents of all the kids willingly send their kids away without questioning any of the specifics. While they are all military families, I find it hard to believe that not one of the families is thinking lawsuit. In addition, Clio and her friends seem completely unfazed that they've been part of unauthorized genetic experiments, and even when they find out what some of the results of those experiments are, they don't even seem to be that interested in finding out more. Since the characters aren't that interested in what's happening to them, as a reader, I found it hard to be interested as well.
The climax was very abrupt and the reveal of the story's villain was predictable; the character was written as a complete cliché.
On the plus side, I haven't read another story like this one and I appreciate the unique premise. Also, the teenage characters actually talk and act like teens, not like Dawson's Creek characters.
All in all, I found Solid to be just okay. While it was a mildly entertaining read, there wasn't enough there for me to want to read the sequels. I'd only recommend it for someone who is looking for a unique story despite its flaws.
